Saturday May 12th was SELF magazine's annual fitness event in Central Park. This event consists of workout classes, mini make-overs, massages, and beauty sampling. SELF offers this event in Chicago, San Francisco, and of course my New York.
The workouts are led by CRUNCH fitness experts. This year they featured CrossFit (WOD); it is the new craze. The aim of this work out is to strengthen and condition the body; it is also a universal training system for the military and police academies.
I also took a new class called POUND Rockout workout. It combines Pilates and drumming movements using Ripstix (weighted drumsticks) to work your core. The class was created by Cristina Peerenboom and Kirsten Potenzak who are real drummers. I've always wanted to learn how to play the drums and taking this class just refreshed my desire. It was fun and I was able to get a lot of frustration out on the banging.
This event costs $20 US dollars but includes a year's subscription to the magazine. You can take up to 11 classes on the day. If you do attend this event next year here are some helpful hints:
-Registration opens at 9am, However, the playfield does not open until 11am. What this means is after you register you will be waiting in line for 2 hours. You can choose to leave and come back but if you do decide to wait on line make sure you bring breakfast and water.
-Main Stage- You can take all the classes you want, no need to sign up.
-Fitness and Quiet Zones-These are two sections that offer specific classes for which there is a limited number of attendees. Because of this you must go to that section and sign up by picking up a wristband.
Wristbands are for specific time slots the classes are offered, without a wristband you will not get into that class. The organizers also set up a wait list line. Sometimes people may get their wristbands but decide to stay in the Main Stage or leave early, making a spot available. If you are unable to get in the zone, you can still do the workout from outside you just won't have a lot of space.
It was a such a beautiful day to be out in nature and sweating up a storm, this is one of my favorite events (Even the Laughing Cow thought so).
Until next year!
