Comic Con 2012

Hey Y'all,
Comic Con gets bigger and better every year. Here are some pictures from this year's Comic Con in New York City, next year I'm definitely dressing up!

The TRUTH about Flavor Monsters

Hey Y'all,
I attended Comic Con and 4 days just isn't enough to cover all of my interests. One of my stops was to the Flavor Monster installation. I love games especially the ones that carry such an important message.
The TRUTH campaign has been around since 2000. It is the largest national smoking prevention campaign for youth but I believe it reaches far beyond.

The new campaign has a game called Flavor Monsters which is available on select iOS and android devices. Sabertooth Interactive developed the game.The concept is based on 45 candy-flavored cigarettes (monsters) which you must kill in order to save humanity.
Upon entering the site my nostrils were filled with with delicious fruit smells, I walked over to where the scents were coming from only to find Colorful jars filled with ugly monster parts (let's just say I no longer wanted to eat what I was smelling).

Next, I was lead over to the special video virtual simulation which made you part of the game. A TRUTH assistant guides you into different directions and physical motions to get you through game (it was great, I really enjoyed it!)

Monitors were set up for you to play the new game, collectible vinyl toys were on display, people took pictures with a life-size FM and free gear was provided.

Some TRUTH facts:
-Among 18-22 year olds, almost 39.9% of those not enrolled full time in college were current smokers, compared to 24.8% of those enrolled in college full time. This pattern held for both males and females.

I stand by this campaign and support all the creative ways they get the message across.

Steampunk

Hey Y'all,
I had a great time at Comic Con. There was a Steampunk 101 panel that I attended. I knew very little about Steampunk but this panel gave me a better understanding.

Speakers included Art Donovan, Evelyn Kriete, G.D. Falksen, Lyndsay Faye, Mark Siegel, and Paul Oliver.
So, what is Steampunk? I think it's a Victorian industrial genre. The foundation is based on what else? 19th century technological advances using "Steam". Steam engines for example, were created changing individuals every day lives. Steam ships and railways were created making job opportunities and travel more accessible.
Some say it is based on a literary genre combining fantasy in a post apocalyptic world.
When I think of this certain thoughts pop into my head; Automaton from the movie "Hugo" and the Telectroscope created by Paul St George connecting Brooklyn's DUMBO to the banks of Thames in London back in 2008.

Steampunk fashion combines mechanical gears and contraptions with Victorian, Neo Vintage pieces like bustiers, bustles, stockings, vests, etc. There are a variety of ways to create your pieces, adding your own personal touch is encouraged.

2012

All the speakers at this panel were great. Evelyn Kriete in particular said something that stuck with me, "Don't let anyone tell you, you're doing it wrong", "Create what you think Steampunk is and don't be afraid to use colors instead of the usual black, beige and browns".
I am looking forward to creating something unique and sexy based on this particular style. xoxo

Columbus is in my living room!

Hey Y'all,
I was extremely excited to see Christopher Columbus Statue up close and personal. The collaboration between Tatzu Nishi, Public Art Fund and NYC Parks Department helped make this possible.
An Italian artist named Gaetano Russo created the Statue in 1892 to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of the famous voyage that discovered the Americas (I know everyone must have an opinion on this particular discovery, but I will be focusing this blog on the installation only). The Statue sits above 75 feet, making the view of Central Park and the surrounding areas breathtaking.
Tatzu Nishi is an amazing artist. This is his first installation in the U.S. The great thing about his installations is you get an up close look at monuments you wouldn't otherwise be able to. He builds around these landmarks and transforms them from an exterior site-seeing spot to interior private living room area.
I love history and being so close to something that has been around since before I was born is mind boggling. This is my first experience with a Tatzu installation and I enjoyed it. The only thing that I would have preferred is having windows behind the Columbus statue so that when you photographed it you can see the park and city view in the photo.
I would love to see an installation of the statue of Loire located in the Palace of Versailles (I can picture him laying there on a huge bed!
What You Need to Know:
-Please go to the Public Art Fund site and reserve your free tickets in advance. Some say that you can obtain tickets there but I know for a fact they have been sold out.
-There are different dates and time slots to choose from.
-Print your confirmation before going, if not you must go to the Information center located on the 3rd floor of the Time Warner Center.
-Arrive 20-30 minutes before your scheduled time, the time slots are estimated.
-You will have approximately 20-30 minutes once you have arrived at the top (there are 6 flights of stairs to climb). I suggest you carry light.
-Don't forget to take pictures of the view outside. Take advantage of all your surroundings. This installation won't always be there, but the statue will. This installation goes until November 18, 2012.
